San Martin del Camino

Less of the meseta

Today was another lovely day. I walked 13kms to San Martin del Camino. The first half of the walk was rather soulless. It was parallel to a busy road and there were mainly truck stops as cafes.

Once off the road though the scenery improved. There were a few of us walking the path so I knew I wasn’t lost.

San Martin is a very small place. It has a restaurant that serves all day. Given that it is Sunday, this is a good thing. I might have starved otherwise. Even if it did take an hour to get served.

Fortunately my Albergue is quite lovely. There are only 8 bunks. I was the first to arrive so I had my choice of beds, a hot shower and plenty of space on the drying racks for clothes that needed washing…..and drying.

I’m much happier now that it’s warmed up and life is simpler. There are no busy cities, bustling hostels and indifferent pilgrims.

There is a quiet garden, caring hospiteleros and I’m sure someone will show up that I know.

I can see the mountains in the distance that I will climb and then my Camino will be almost over. I will have to book my bus trip back to Porto where I will fly home.

On the one hand I miss everything about home – I even listened to my music today while walking. It was laced with Christmas Carols. But somehow I don’t want to leave. It’s a simple life here. Walk, eat, sleep, write. The Camino has crept into my soul. It’s going to be really hard to leave.

I’ll keep you posted. Buen Camino.
