Ponferrada 5

Pretty town

Today is the first sign that the coughing has eased. I may be on the mend. I spent a good deal of time rewriting the lyrics to a popular song from years ago – “wasting away in Ponferradaville,” except that I’m not wasting my time. I’m healing.

I’m also managing to eat a bit more. The stitches are easing. Yesterday I went back to the delightful pastry shop because they also do savouries. I had an open faced sandwich of cream cheese topped with smoked salmon and decorated with noisettes of creamed avocado. It was divine, if a little too much for my still a bit sore mouth.

Today I walked around looking for the Mercado which I had passed and entered several days ago. No luck. I was hoping to buy some more clementines and a wedge of cheese from at least two of the stalls – too bad. I did find a grocery store – not the same – and got some nice clementines, a wheel of 8 foil wrapped cheese triangles – again not the same – and a bun. I’ll concoct something for dinner.

Walking back I passed that perfect little pastry shop again. Well, it was close to Canadian lunch time and there were a lot of Spanish people in there too eating – surprise! surprise.

I opted for something lighter this time. I ordered a croissant layered with Brie then filled with some soft sliced pear. Everything was drizzled with honey. THIS is how you should eat in Spain – French!!!

Of course I will go back for a third and last lunch tomorrow, my last day. Saturday I leave for an Albergue about 3kms from Santiago. I will meet Cynthia there and test out the revised requirements for getting a Compostella. I will have done several consecutive 100kms stretches of walking and l will walk three kilometres into the centre of Santiago and the cathedral. Wish me luck

I’ll keep you posted.
