There are some “things” I would like to remember about this journey but they didn’t make it into the posts.
- I want to remember the rabbits. Nick and I stopped at a small farmers’ market just outside of Sarria. We bought clementines and an orange and almost cried over the cages of small rabbits. There were 6 or 8 bunnies per cage and at least a dozen cages. I hated to think that they were being sold for food – but maybe.
- I want to remember the mass we attended at the church of St. Nicholas. It wasn’t so much about the mass, although it re-enforces the traditions of the Camino, it was more about our credential stamp which would be given after mass. Well the school groups had it down to a science and entered the church from their cafe tables after mass for their stamps. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
- My glitchy hip. From Sarria to our next stop there were a few significant climbs. My hip(s) have never been a problem. However as we were just setting out I was in a little pain. I thought if this continues and gets worse, my Camino days are over. It disappeared the next day. Thank you Santiago.
- Crazy elevators in Spain. At one Albergue our room was on the second floor. We pressed 2 on the elevator. Number 3 showed up on the screen. We pressed 3 then 4 and then whatever. We road up and down a while. Just one of those mysteries that will never be solved in this life.
- Nick adjusting my hiking poles. If I’m a little OCD, Nick is a lot. I have been walking for most of this Camino with one pole about 2” shorter than the other. Nick couldn’t stand it and fixed it. Nothing earth shattering but often it’s the small things that make the difference.
- Nick carrying his own pack for all but one transfer. From Sarria to our next stop, Nick had his pack transferred along with mine. The next day he decided to carry it. It wasn’t a problem and he never needed to forward it again. I sent mine ahead every day. Mea culpa.
