I have not read a book of this intensity in a long time. Patrick Leigh Fermor was 62, already a published author, when he began the trilogy of his walk from Hook of Holland to Constantinople at the age of 18 in 1933. There is much embellishment, however the author even at 18 was a Latin scholar, a linguist and a rebel. I was challenged on every page of this fascinating account. Needless to say I have ordered the second in the series – a must read!
