Today is my last full day in Burgos. It’s a beautiful city. Where Barcelona has charming narrow streets, Burgos has gorgeous wide open spaces. I strolled through elegant plazas and tree lined promenades, the cathedral dominating it all. It will be hard to leave.
My backpack should arrive today and I will be grateful for a change of clothes and a toothbrush. I haven’t minded too much the inconvenience of not having my conveniences. It is after all what the Camino is all about. However l am aware that others might mind my lack of clean clothes and liberal use of various other hygiene products.
Still l was able to socialize last night in the bar where l had hoped to have a dinner of fish and chips. Well it is after all a Scottish bar and nothing says Britain like a plate of fish and chips.
Ok I’m not in Britain and they didn’t have fish and chips in spite of the fact that it appeared in several different forms on their various menus. I made do with some sort of chicken and potato thing with 2 glasses of wine and an offer to sit with the Scottish group I had dinner with in Puerta La Reina.
I declined the offer as my snack had just arrived and settled for a slurred rendering of the folk song Flower of Scotland as they headed off for schnapps someplace else.
I spent the rest of the evening chatting to a lovely woman from Germany who hadn’t realized the power of Sangria. I’ve had it a few times and only drink it when I know there will be no added liqueur.
Back at the hostel, the woman in the bunk above me announced that she was leaving at 4:00am. I’m not sure this is allowed even on the Camino. Still she slipped out will a full pack and I barely heard her.
I spent the morning sorting out my lodging. I bought a small notebook at the gift shop in the Cathedral. I was having trouble organizing all my hostels moving forward online. In fact switching between apps was giving my mind the equivalent of whiplash.
Tonight I’ll try another restaurant for dinner and see how it goes. So far for lunch I’ve had every mixed salad going and they’ve all been delicious.
More thoughts in my next post.
