This book is a delightful read. Written by the walking correspondent of The Times, Christopher Somerville, The January Man describes 12 British walks one for each month of the year. The walks, however, are not central to the narrative. The author’s stories are more about the culture of an area and his struggles to understand the man his father was. Delicately written with detailed listings of wildflowers, birdlife and local terrain, along with colourful folklore and personal histories, Somerville’s book is a captivating account of Britain’s more isolated places. I really enjoyed The January Man.
