This book is a delightful read. Written by the walking correspondent of The Times, Christopher Somerville, The January Man describes 12 British walks one for each month of the year. Walking, however, is not central to the narrative. The book is more about the culture of the area he is walking and his struggles to understand the man his father was. Delicately written with detailed listings of wildflowers, birdlife and local terrain, along with colourful folklore and personal histories, Somerville’s book is a captivating description of Britain’s more isolated places. I really enjoyed The January Man.
