I knew about Nan Shepherd from several of the walking anthologies I have read and reviewed. Given the unique history of this particular publication, I decided that I had to read it. It is a classic.
The living mountain for the author is The Cairngorms in northern Scotland. Nan has walked extensively in these mountains for more than forty years. Her book is a celebration of their life, her life.
Exquisitely written with a superb introduction by Robert MacFarlane, it’s worth every word and step.
PS. Nan Shepherd is the face you will see on the Bank of Scotland five pound note. Enjoy.
