Written in an almost poetic prose, The Old Ways is a celebration of journeys taken by the author, Robert MacFarlane, to find and then walk paths that were almost lost with the changing times. From Scotland to India, Essex to Segovia or The Outer Hebrides to traditional sea paths, the author recreates the excitement of a long walk. The common thread through all these adventures is the concept that man does not change his environment, rather the environment changes the man. There is something very genuine about the author, the book and the paths walked. There is a stripping away of convention, an embracing of the unusual and an elevation of the commonplace. “AI” could never be this unique – a must read.
