You will like the author, Laurie Dennett. She’s Canadian (from Toronto), writes exceptionally well and is walking the Camino FranceĀ“s (from Chartres) to raise funds for MS – Multiple Sclerosis. Laurie walked in 1986, staying mainly in small hotels and connecting every week with a radio station – CFRB to recount her adventures and solicit donations for MS. Older Canadian readers will recognize names, such as, Roy McMurtry and Wally Crouter, dignitaries who were helping her reach her fund raising goal.
Connecting to a radio station at a specific time, every week, often from public telephones in 1986 Europe was a challenge. Walking the first thirty days of her Camino in bitter cold and constant rain was another challenge. Communicating and connecting with interesting people, though, never seemed to be a challenge. Laurie is fluent in French, very good with Spanish and has a working knowledge of Italian which helped her on a subsequent Camino from London to Rome. She also walked from Canterbury to Jerusalem. Both journeys were also to raise funds for MS, a disease that afflicted her mother. I am in awe of the challenges she completed!!
I would definitely recommend this book. It re-enforces so many of the values that define a Camino. Laurie covered all her own expenses. Walked for a common cause and despite a lot of publicity was very much the quiet pilgrim.
